In this talk, Rojda Tugrul explores the impact of decades-long war on the ecological and cultural heritage of Kurdistan within its socio-political context. Focusing on Earth phenomena such as rivers, villages, mountains, and liminal spaces in upper Mesopotamia, she examines how the transformation and deterioration of the land and the dispossession of habitats reflect shifts in cultural identity and the collective psyche. Her analysis also delves into the politics of art, the autonomy of artistic representations, and the power of images.

As part of her talk, the artist will show video footage, photographs and animations whose protagonists are drawn animals from Mesopotamia: Flamingo, cricket, rabbit and river turtle.

Rojda Tugrul’s presentation will be followed by a short drawing session that invites participants to engage with the concepts discussed in the talk, such as 'displacement', 'migration' and 'unease', providing a tactile and embodied experience.
